Abstracting From The Figure
Aberfeldy
20th July – 24th July
10am – 4pm
£470
This five-day summer school explores the human figure as a starting point for abstraction. Taking inspiration from a range of artists especially the Bay Area Figurative artists such as Richard Diebenkorn, Joan Brown, David Park, Elmer Bischoff etc... the workshop focuses on how observation, gesture, and structure can be pushed beyond description toward more expressive and abstract painted forms.
Working from the figure, participants will investigate proportion, movement, and spatial relationships, gradually loosening their approach through mark-making, distortion, and colour. Emphasis is placed on the tension between representation and abstraction, and on using the figure as a vehicle for energy, rhythm, and emotional charge rather than literal likeness.
Suitable for all levels, the course combines guided exercises and individual support. Students will be encouraged to experiment, take risks, and develop a more personal and responsive approach to painting from the figure
